Hij kreeg grote bekendheid in 1959 toen hij zich aansloot bij Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, voor wie hij uiteindelijk de belangrijkste componist werd. Hij sloot zich in 1964 aan bij het Second Great Quintet van Miles Davis en was in 1970 medeoprichter van de jazzfusionband Weather Report. Hij nam als bandleider meer dan 20 albums op.
